John T. Butler brings more than 25 years of experience in fundraising, philanthropy, leadership, and strategic and tactical planning.  As Secretary for Development with the Archdiocese of Washington, Mr. Butler works to advance the archdiocese’s successful development efforts to support the evangelization, and pastoral and charitable works of the archdiocese.

 Prior to joining the Archdiocese of Washington, John served as Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement for the University of the District of Columbia where he oversaw the UDC Foundation and all university fundraising, campaigns, alumni relations and external outreach. Prior to that, he served as the Vice President for Advancement at Mount Saint Mary’s University where he successfully completed a 60 million dollar campaign, the largest in the university’s history, and directed the development efforts of the university, seminary and National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes.  Earlier, John Butler served as President of Archbishop Carroll High School, which is located in the Archdiocese of Washington. 

Coupled with his fundraising experience, John T. Butler served as President and CEO of the Human Resource Learning Center where he assisted numerous public and private-sector clients plan and execute strategic initiatives.

In addition to his role as a member of the board of directors with the Association of Fundraising Professionals-DC, John is actively involved as a member of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Advisory Council; the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta; Leadership Greater Washington; and Leadership Maryland. He is past Board Chair for Leadership Greater Washington, the Fishing School and Carroll Publishing Company.  And is a former board member of Mount Saint Mary’s University, Anchor Mental Health, Center City Consortium for Catholic Elementary Schools, and the District of Columbia Workforce Investment Council.

John holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from St. Michael’s College in Vermont, a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Howard University, and certification in Group Psychotherapy from the Psychiatric Institute of Washington.
